I would like to thank, the descendant of Austin Charles Tann, who lives in Lawrence County, Illinois who provided me with photos and the oral history of this branch of the Tann family. 

Tann Family Cemetery

There are several members of the Tann family who are buried at the Tann Family Cemetery. 

Austin  Charles Tann

Austin Charles Tann was born in 1790 in Virginia, He was the son of Anthony and Margaret Tann. 

 

In 1810, at nineteen years of age, Austin watched as an Indian Scout at Fort Allison. Austin met with the Indiana Govener William Henry Harrison and the Native American leader "Tecumseh".

Austin and Sarah Cole/Pettiford were married in 1818 in Illinois.

Austin Charles Tann

"As Austin  Tann was returning, one day, from Small's Mill on the Embarras with a sack of meal, he was pursued by a band of Indians on ponies. He was riding a large horse and took refuge in the marsh, southwest of Russellville. His pursuers were unable to follow him with their ponies, and he escaped with only the loss of his grist."

Joseph Tann, born in 1824 in Illinois, son of Austin and Sarah (COLE/PETTIFORD) Tann. Joseph married Mary WATSON.

John  Tann, born in February 1827 in Illinois, son of Austin and Sarah (COLE) Tann. On April 22, 1853, in Iroquois, Illinois, John Tann married Rebecca Amanda BASS, (b. November 18, 1826, in Walker, Alabama, daughter of Sion and Sarah (CHAPLIN) Bass, of Nash County, North Carolina.

Mary Adeline Tann was born June 3, 1855, in Fayette, Iowa, daughter of John and Amanda Rebecca (BASS) Tann.

 

On December 14, 1873, in Fayette, Iowa, Mary Tann married Thomas David Lewis. 

​

Maude Lewis was the daughter of Thomas and Mary (Tann) Lewis married Charles P. Howard in Iowa. Charles and Maude (Lewis) Howard had three sons, Charles Howard, Joseph Howard, and Lawrence Howard. ( Seen in the photo above)

John Henry Tann

John Henry Tann was born on April 9, 1867, in Fayette, Iowa, son of John and Amanda (Bass) Tann. John Tann married Jeanette MOORE.

Sarah Ann Tann, born daughter of Austin and Sarah (COLE) Tann. 

Levi Tann

Levi Tann was born in 1842 in Lawrence, Illinois, and the son of Austin Charles Tann. On December 18, 1862, in Lawrence, Illinois, Levi Tann married Harriet Anderson (born 1846). Levi was a Sargent in the USCT military and died in 1865 in Virginia. Levi is buried at City Point National Cemetery in Hopewell, Hopewell City, Virigina
